Connecting with our Youth
John’s Place program is a partnership between Employment Directions and The Father’s Farm, located at our workshop in Nuriootpa in the Barossa Valley. The program runs on Thursday from 10am to 1pm and is focused on years 6/7 and secondary school students who are disengaged, or at risk of disengaging from learning or who need flexible learning options.
The design of the program has been influenced by knowledge and experience gained from other successful programs and utilises the volunteer mentoring facilities available.
The Program Coordinator works closely with school personnel to customise the program delivery to suit the needs of the young people attending. The John’s Place program includes a variety of activities that are selected based on the cohort of students, such as age, ability, goals, education and vocation.
What We Do
Activities & Programs
Metalwork & Welding
Students in years 8-12 work with a trade qualified volunteer to design and construct metalwork projects, while working on communication, safety & goals setting skills.
Cooking
While students learn the essential life skill of cooking and food preparation in this program, they also learn how to work together, follow instructions, socialisation and food safety.
Woodwork
Students in years 8-12 work with a trade qualified volunteer to design and construct woodwork projects, while working on communication, safety & goals setting skills.
Arts & Craft
Self-expression and creativity is the focus of this program as students in year 6-12 work with clay, paints, design and other mediums.
E-waste recycling
Students practice communication and socialisation skills, while learning how to safely recycle electrical components, teaching them patience and sustainability.

Who manages the Program?
Employment Directions are responsible for the overall management and organisation of the program. As such, they have appointed a Program Coordinator who has the relevant qualifications and experience to provide mentoring, coaching and support for the students.
To support this coordinator, John’s Place also has mentors who are experienced in a wide range of life skills and activities.
When does the Program run?
The program runs on Thursday mornings from 10am-1pm and is designed for a group of up to 10 students.
Who can attend John's Place program?
The young people attending are from FLO, NDIS, and surrounding schools or home-schooled students.
What is the cost of John's Place program?
The cost of the program is $440 per school term, per student. These fees cover basic materials used in the program, upkeep of the tools and equipment, art and craft supplies, food for cooking and the lunches provided.
This cost has been kept as low as possible and is subsidised by donations from the local community and the money received from the e-waste program.
